Should we burn Medium to the ground?
I mean in a Woodstock 99’ kind of way.
The left-wing bias on places like Medium and Reddit has become excruciatingly painful for anyone who's had the misfortune to read there—the complete Disneyfication of critical thought.
For instance, the top articles for politics on Medium are this:
All of this makes me reflect to two years ago when Medium removed my article “Being a Democrat is Easy, It’s Why a Red Wave is Coming.”
I touched on the lies of the pandemic in that piece, only briefly, but according to Medium’s staff it was enought to be removed for “elevated risk of potential harm to persons or public health” regarding information covering COVID-19.
WTF? Way to stick up for your writers.
The article wasn’t about how to blow up the Federal Reserve (good idea?) or how to spread the virus. It was a CDC-sourced, WHO-sourced, and NewsGuard-vetted critique of COVID-19 vaccine effectiveness; it also covered the misinformation peddled by Joe Biden and Rachel Maddow and the political game-playing with people’s lives.
And it was written by me, a former USA Today journalist.
That word makes me vomit now, “journalist.” Ew.
In recent years there has been mass censorship on issues like health, finance, corporate corruption (socialize loses and privatize profits), surveillance, and the concentration of powers in the executive for the 'greater good'. This is bullshit.
I want to talk about what Medium has become and why it’s worth changing.
Should Right-Wing Bloggers Exist?
In my four years writing on Medium I never met another right-wing blogger.
Granted I’m not even right-wing.
I stated down a path, like many of you, noticing things that didn’t add up:
Obama wasn’t a good president and drone striked kids
Trump wasn’t a dictator or a bad president, and didn’t start new wars
The pandemic revealed how easy it was to become a Nazi (Read Ordinary Men)
Other platforms have creators who cover stories like this or write from their perspective like YouTube or Substack—but Medium had no one. Besides me.
Almost nobody pays for real journalism anymore. And almost nobody wants it. A clickbait listicle reaffirming your world view could make more than a serious piece of journalism that may costs 50x as much to publish.
Is it also because blogging is a liberal thing? Is it globohomo? Idk. Let me know in the comments below.
(guess I can kiss any future of a 9-5 goodbye)
I felt many times like I was the only voice of dissention of Medium and it got me in a lot of trouble. A feminist dilettan once wrote a response to me that the “Male Lonliness Epidemic didn’t exist.”
It got her millions of views.
And once Medium hit the block button on me, it was like I vanished. My stories never saw the light of recommendation again.
This isn’t a trip down memory lane. But I do think there is something sinister about a left-wing echo chamber like Medium or Reddit.
There are absolutely right-wing echochambers, but in order to be a Trump guy, you have to have rejected ALL the narratives that make an NPC an NPC.
In case you don’t know what an NPC is, author of The White Pill Michael Malice describes it as: “When we played games like Final Fantasy in those games you go to the armor store or the weapon store and there's a guy running that store within the game. He does not exist outside of that store, that character all he does is buy armor and sell armor. He's the NPC and the point this meme makes is the vast majority of humans are non-player characters they have no mind outside their programming.
It’s like this new chart David Sacks from the All In Podcast tweeted out that your trust in the mainstream media correlates with your political ideology:
With that I want to ask: What’s Medium’s brand?
Who's the Tucker Carlson, Matt Taibbi, Jessica Wildfire (RIP her Medium presence), Seymour Hersh, Meghan Murphy, Whitney Webb, or Jim Cramer of Medium?
What content can I get there that I can’t get anywhere else?
Obama’s ghostwriter…? Burning man? DNC shill content?
I’ll gladly even take far-left politics over what they promote. People like my old friend Jared Brock command my admiration. He’s loyal to his ideals above everything. Give me someone who isn’t bought and sold.
This is why Substack is valued more than Medium.
Since its 2012 inception, Medium has pulled in $176 million in funding and now valued at $600 million valuation.
Substack, which has never censored—with some writers even launching full websites on it like Medium back in the day— is worth $650 million and is barely five years old.
If you only cater to one political ideology your brand will die.
Just look at RFK Jr., and Tulsi Gabbard, the latter who was VP of the fucking DNC in 2016 and both of whom once-endorsed Bernie Sanders and are now endorsing Donald fucking Trump. Excuse my French.
So what to be done with Medium?
My Plans for Medium in 2024-25
I got censored for stating facts about Covid-19.
Not a good look, or precedent, yet it happened.
What happens during the next event where someone takes a stance against something Medium or Reddit doesn’t agree with?
I have to imagine real libreals like Hunter Thompson, JFK, and Orwell would puke at the censorship that Democrats enact nowadays.
If your article is not inclusive, pro lgbt, or left wing, places like Medium and Reddit will bury your posts to put listicles about marketing or other pseudo-journalist trash like "look what joke Kamala made now" or "Drumpf is finished.”
And if Trump wins all of these sites will go even more left wing wacko.
It's time to shake up the echo chamber, provoke some real thought, and pull folks back from the brink.
(if anyone does know a writer like this on Medium, please share)
As Malcolm X once said, minority communities should try to hold their votes hostage and make both parties work for it.
My first instinct was to torch platforms like Medium, burn the rigid thinking to ashes. But what I really crave is a mass exodus from dogma, a shift away from the fundamentalist that this new disneyfied Democratic party has become.
Will they accept some sort of dissenting opinion during an election?
Do you think it’s possible? We’ll see.
Thanks to commentors who told to watch Shawn Ryan’s episode about the botched Afghanistan withdrawal. While I am happy we got out, we clearly did with our heads hung in shame. I talked to my dad about this who’s in the Army and he said many soldiers got PTSD from that day.
P.S.S. I had this article ready for last week but wanted to revise it a few times; new video is coming this Sunday though with one of the execs for the new social media app under Naval Ravikant Airchat!
What is the risk to the public of injecting disinfectant to fight a pandemic? What is the risk to the public of developing a vaccine at “warp speed”, ignoring all the safeguards? A plague on both your houses!
You could write a letter to explain your case and ask to be let in again? Keep up the great work! Freedom of opinion and freedom of speech as long it is not harassment or insulting a group or individual. ps: Your articles are interesting and fun to read , it has a lot of room for debate!
